Slipper Socks: What They Are and How to Choose a Pair

It's the first properly cold evening of the year. You've pulled on two pairs of normal socks, then your slippers, and you can still feel the floor through all three layers. One slipper keeps slipping off at the heel. The other keeps skating across the tiles.

Looking for slipper socks? You're in good company. Plenty of people end up here torn between slippers and normal socks, wondering which one they actually need. Here's what slipper socks are, how they differ from both, and what's worth checking before you buy a pair.

So what exactly is a slipper sock?

A slipper sock is footwear for home that pulls on as easily as normal socks and does the job of a slipper. It hugs your whole foot, so there's no heel to slip out of, and it has a sole that grips, so you can walk around in it all day.

Is it a slipper? Is it a sock? No! It's The Foozie.

That's still our favorite way to explain the idea. You get the warmth of a slipper with the ease of normal socks, in one thing you never have to kick off or hunt for under the sofa.

Slipper socks vs slippers

Most slippers are built around a sole first and your foot second. That works until they flop off on the stairs, leave your ankles bare, or get abandoned by the back door the moment you sit down.

A slipper sock moves with you instead. It stays put when you tuck your feet under you on the sofa, when you climb into bed, and when you're up again at midnight for a glass of water.

One customer put it plainly: "Hubby got me these for mothers day and oh my god I will never wear normal slippers again."

Slipper socks vs normal socks

Normal socks are made to sit inside shoes, so they're thin by design. On a cold floor, that thinness is the whole problem: the chill comes straight up through the sole, and doubling up only helps a little.

Slipper socks go the other way. They're thick, soft and made purely for home, so they don't need to squeeze into anything.

That thickness is where the warmth comes from. Rated 4.5 TOG, The Foozie is 10x warmer than cotton socks.

Or, in the words of another happy customer: "My toes are warm as toast🤗"

What to look for in a good pair

Every pair of slipper socks looks soft in a photo. These four details decide whether a pair actually earns its spot by your bed.

1. A lining that does the work

The warmth lives on the inside. Look for a deep, springy lining rather than a soft shell over a thin knit, because the lining is what holds warm air against your skin.

Ours is built from an ultra-thick plush outer lining and premium sherpa on the inside. It's also 100% vegan and cruelty-free. No sheep were harmed to keep you cozy.

2. Grips underneath

A soft sole on a hard floor is how slippery moments happen. Check for real grips across the bottom, not just a printed pattern that wears away.

Every Foozie carries non-slip silicone grips, so the hallway, the kitchen tiles and the dash to the front door all stay steady.

3. Height

A short pair leaves a cold gap at the ankle, which is exactly where the chill sneaks in. Look for a tall cuff you can wear pulled up or folded down.

The Foozie has a tall sock design for complete foot and ankle warmth, with the fluffy sherpa cuff on show when you fold it over.

4. Fit

A slipper sock that's too tight squashes its own lining, and a squashed lining is a cold lining. Too loose, and it twists around your foot. Pick by shoe size: The Foozie comes in Kids/Small, Medium and Large.

  • Kids/Small fits UK 2–5 and EU 35–38 (US women's 4–7, US men's 3–6).
  • Medium fits UK 5–9 and EU 38–42 (US women's 7–11, US men's 6–10).
  • Large fits UK 9–13 and EU 42–46 (US women's 11–15, US men's 10–14).

Between sizes? Go up one. And Kids/Small suits older kids, teens and grown-ups with smaller feet as well.

When to wear them

First thing in the morning, before the kettle has boiled. Straight after a shower, when your feet are warm and you'd like them to stay that way. At the desk, on the sofa, and last thing at night under the covers.

That's the joy of a pair you don't take off. There's no swapping between slippers, bare feet and whatever else is lying around as you move from room to room, and nothing to trip over by the bed.

Fair warning, though. They tend to get borrowed, and not always returned: "I have to practically wrestle them off him to wash them. I think he'd live in them if he could."

Looking after your pair

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, with similar colors. Air dry.

Thick layers hold on to water, so give them a day on the rack and keep them away from the dryer. Treat them gently and the sherpa stays soft and springy for longer.

Which pair to start with

For a first pair, start with The Foozie™, the classic. It comes in shades from Blue and Pink through to Black and White, so there's one for every kind of feet.

Prefer something slimmer? The Foozie™ Move wears a diamond cable knit on the outside with sherpa fleece inside. The Foozie™ Move is the #1 travel slipper sock, and it's the pair people pack for long trips.

Like a little personality on your feet? The Foozie™ Yum designs wear smiling snack characters, and the Christmas designs bring a festive knit to the season.

Ready for warmer feet?

Another customer summed it up better than we could: "Foozies are great, warm and soft. Wish I'd bought these years ago."
